Vegetarian Options for Subway Sandwiches

Updated February 21, 2017

Subway® is an international restaurant franchise that specialises in made-to-order sandwiches and salads. They offer a variety of breakfast, lunch and dinner options that include a selection of breads, toppings, dressings and condiments. The menu includes traditional fare as well as low fat, low calorie and vegetarian choices.

Forms of Vegetarianism

True vegetarians do not eat any form of meat, fish or chicken and subsist only on fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, grains and legumes. Some people refer to their diets as semi-vegetarian and eat fish as well as a small amount of poultry. A pesci-vegetarian shuns poultry but includes fish in their diet. Lacto-ovo vegetarians eat eggs and dairy products but no fish, meat or chicken, lacto vegetarians eat all dairy products except eggs, and ovo vegetarians eat eggs but no dairy products. Subway® menu items appeal to several different kind of vegetarians.

Strict Vegetarian Options

If you eat no meat whatsoever, the only two options are the Veggie Delite® sandwich or the veggie patty burger, the latter of which is not as widely available. The Veggie Delite® is a cold sandwich comprised of iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, red onions, green peppers and cucumbers served with your choice of bread and condiments. The veggie patty burger is a combination of coarsely ground black olives, bell peppers, carrots, mushrooms and rice. Rolled oats add crunch to the burger, which is served hot or cold on the diner's choice of bread with preferred toppings.

Semi-Vegetarian Choices

Vegetarians who eat fish and poultry can feast on Subway®'s Turkey Breast, Tuna Salad, Oven Roasted Chicken Patty or Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki sandwiches. The teriyaki choice includes teriyaki glazed chicken strips, sweet onion sauce, lettuce, tomatoes, green peppers, olives and red onions. If you prefer conventional deli-style sandwiches, order the Cold Cut Combo made of turkey salami, turkey ham, cheese and a choice of condiments and vegetable toppings.

Other Vegetarian Alternatives

Other than the strict vegetarian options, pesci-vegetarians only have the Tuna Salad sandwich alternative. Lacto-ovo vegetarians and lacto vegetarians can order a sandwich made with a selection of cheese and vegetables. Ovo vegetarians have no sandwich options at Subway® other than the Veggie Delite®.

Custom Made Sandwiches

Many Subway® sandwich shops accommodate customer needs by altering standard ingredients of menu sandwich recipes. A classic Subway® Club can be made with turkey ham instead of regular ham and without roast beef, the Chicken and Bacon Ranch would be tasty without the bacon but still include the roasted chicken, cheese blend, ranch dressing and vegetables, and the Subway® Melt can be altered to include turkey breast, turkey ham, melted cheese and vegetable toppings.
