A pony bead key chain is a simple craft project that is geared toward children. Pony beads are large, brightly coloured plastic beads that come in various shapes. You can use a printed ribbon or plastic or fibre cord to string the beads and attach them to the key ring with a knot.

Using Polyester Ribbon

Measure and cut a 10-inch piece of ribbon and lay it flat on your work surface. Place a split ring on the centre of the ribbon. Loop the ribbon through the split ring. Tie an overhand knot to attach it to the centre of the ribbon. Hold both pieces of ribbon together. Slide a bead onto both pieces of the ribbon. Tie a knot in the ribbon just below the bead. Slide another bead onto the ribbon and tie another knot. Continue until all the beads have been added to the ribbon. Clip off any frayed edges of the ribbon. Apply a thin coat of clear nail polish on the ends of the ribbon and let it dry according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Using Plastic Cord

Measure and cut the plastic cord into two 10-inch pieces. Lay the two pieces of plastic cord together on your work surface and place the split ring in the centre. Loop both pieces of plastic cord through the split ring. Tie an overhand knot in the centre of the cords to attach the split ring. Slide the pony beads onto each plastic cord strand. Fill each cord strand with beads. Leave approximately 1 inch at the end to make the final knot. Gather the ends of the all the plastic cords together and tie a knot. Apply a dab of epoxy on the knot and allow it to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Braided Fiber Cord

Measure and cut the fibre cord into three 12-inch pieces. Lay the cords together on your work surface and place the split ring in the centre. Loop the three cords through the split ring. Tie a knot in the centre of the three cords to attach the split ring. Braid the cords for approximately 1 inch from the split ring. Slide a bead on one of the cords and braid the cords twice to hold the bead in place. Continue adding beads and braiding the cords until you have approximately 1 inch of the cords left at the end. Gather all of the cords together in a straight line and tie a knot at the end after the final bead. Apply a dab of epoxy on the knot and allow to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Elastic Cord with Alphabet Beads

Measure and cut an 18 inch piece of elastic cord. Lay the cord on your work surface and place the split ring in the centre. Loop the cord through the split ring. Tie a knot in the centre of the cord to attach the split ring. Lay out your bead design for each cord strand on your work surface. Use the alphabet beads to spell out a name, a sentiment or slogan. Leave 1 inch to allow room to tie the knot at the ends. Slide coloured beads onto one strand of the cord and add each alphabet bead according to your design on the second strand of cord. Tie the two cord strands together at the end of the beads to make one loop. Apply a dab of epoxy on the knot and allow to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions. Trim off any excess cord.
