Cold porcelain is an air-dry modelling clay, which can be prepared at home using white glue and cornstarch. The material is elastic and soft and is similar to porcelain. If you like the idea of working with cold porcelain, you should get a few tools that could make your job easier. You can use any sculpting or pottery tools or improvise and use items that you have in your home as tools.

Rolling Pin

A rolling pin is useful both when you make the cold porcelain and when you create with it. This tool stretches out the material and you may create thinner or thicker layers of material, which can be cut with cookie cutters or turned into clay slabs. You may get rolling pins of various sizes and use them according to the project you are working on. Wooden rolling pins are better than silicone or porcelain ones because the cold porcelain is less likely to stick to wood.

Cookie Cutters

Cookie cutters may be used when you work with cold porcelain. You can obtain two-dimensional shapes without having any prior pottery or sculpting experience. The shapes you obtain can be painted and may function as Christmas tree decorations, pieces of mobiles for babies, or decorations for your kitchen.

Ball Stylus Tool

A ball stylus tool is used in making decorations for cakes, but you may use it in your cold porcelain projects when making flower petals, leaves or figurines. The tool has a ball at each end and typically, the balls have different sizes. This tool makes round indentions on cold porcelain, and you may also use it to smooth curves or to cup and frill flower petals.

Wire Loop

The wire loop is a tool that is used in sculpting and ceramics and may be useful when you want to carve and shape cold porcelain figurines. Wire loops are available in various sizes, and you may get one or several to accomplish your designs.

Rubber Stamps

You can use stamps to make the surface of cold porcelain interesting or place recurring motifs on your sculptures. You may use any type of rubber stamps that you can buy in crafts stores, or you can make your own stamp using a rubber eraser. Bear in mind that the image will be reversed when stamped when carving the design on rubber.

Tools From Your Home

You can use less traditional tools when modelling and sculpting the cold porcelain. Forks or combs can carve striations on cold porcelain surfaces and you may find fabrics, brushes and other objects that can be pressed against the clay to create textures.
