If you are hosting a party or creating a haunted house this Halloween, incorporate tasty snacks that look and feel like guts and other body parts. Prepare anything from a brain to intestines by using red or green food colouring to look bloody or rotten. While you certainly want your edible guts to look realistic, use your trusted recipes to make them taste good as well.

Gelatin Brain

A gelatin brain is a tasty treat that is quick and easy to make. Purchase a mould shaped like a brain, fill it with green or red mix (prepared according to the instructions on the box) and refrigerate until firm. Before your party, remove the mould and place the gelatin brain on a platter for your guests to enjoy.

Bleeding Heart

Imakeprojects.com recommends preparing a bleeding heart with a bag of edible blood inside. When you cut into it, the "blood" will splatter all over the knife and plate. Making the heart requires an anatomically-correct heart-shaped mould, red gelatin mix and evaporated skimmed milk. Making the blood bag requires filling a pastry bag with corn syrup and red food colouring. For an added touch, you can paint the heart with food colouring to make it look more realistic. (See Resource 1 for directions.)

Puff Pastry Intestines

Canarygirl.com suggests baking puff pastry intestines that look gruesome and taste delicious. To make them, roll homemade or store-bought puff pastry into long ropes. Place the ropes on a baking tray in an intestine-like pattern. Next, paint the dough with red food colouring to look like blood. Bake for about 20 minutes or until golden brown. For added flavour, fill the puff pastry with a filling of your choice.

Eyeball Cupcakes

Eyeball cupcakes make a festive Halloween treat. To make them, cover vanilla cupcakes with a flat layer of white fondant or frosting. Use a black decorating gel pen to draw a pupil in the middle of each cupcake. Use blue, green and brown decorating gel pens to draw the iris around each pupil. With a red decorating gel pen, draw thin veins from the iris to the outer edges of the cupcakes.
