Many different crafts are fun to make out of recycled materials. One item that can be transformed into many creative and easy crafts is a water bottle top. Through painting and decorating these tops, many projects can be created, like a polka-dotted photo frame, an imitation mosaic flowerpot, a snowman ornament and a ladybug pin.

Photo Frame

A cute photo frame can be created using water bottle tops. To start, purchase an unfinished wooden photo frame from a craft store. Paint the frame one colour. This can be white or a colour that may go with the desired colour theme of the frame. Paint several water bottle tops using different colours. Using only pastel colours or only bold colours could create a colour theme. The colours and theme can be altered to fit the personality of the person who the photo frame is being made for. Once the water bottle tops and photo frame have dried, glue the tops to the photo frame using a hot glue gun. Be sure to have an adult do this part as the hot glue can burn skin. Add a little sparkle to the frame with glitter paint for a finished touch. This craft is quick and easy to make and is very affordable.

Imitation Mosaic Flowerpot

Mosaic crafts are beautiful but can be difficult for children to make because of the tiny glass pieces being a hazard. An imitation mosaic flowerpot can be made using water bottle tops. To start, paint a large flowerpot with white paint. The white paint serves as the white grout that is used in traditional mosaic crafts to hold the tiny glass pieces together. Paint the tops many colours. The painted tops can be arranged in a design or pattern on the flowerpot, so keep this in mind when painting the caps. Once the bottle tops are dry, have an adult use a hot glue gun to glue the tops on the pot. Leave spaces between the caps to show the white paint underneath, like the grout in real mosaic pieces. If you are creative with the colours and patterns, a simple imitation mosaic flowerpot is easily created.

Snowman Ornament

Water bottle tops can be used to create an adorable snowman ornament. To start, paint three tops white. Once the tops have dried, glue them together, as if stacked like a snowman, one on top of the other with the flat sides of the tops exposed. Be sure an adult uses a hot glue gun to glue the tops together. Once the glue is dry, lay the connected tops on a piece of white card stock and outline it. Cut out the outline of paper and glue it to the back of the ornament. A child can glue the card stock on with regular glue. You can cut two tiny arms out of brown card stock paper. Position the arms on the sides of the snowman, coming from the backside and glue in place. You can use black puffy paint to paint on charcoal eyes and mouth and orange puffy paint for a carrot nose. Complete the snowman craft by using a hot glue gun to glue a looped string on the back for hanging the snowman on a tree. This craft needs adult assistance, but has many steps for children to complete on their own.

Another great idea for a water bottle top craft is a simple ladybug pin. Start by painting a top red and then use black paint to decorate the top in the style of a ladybug. Once the paint is dry, trace around the bottle top on a piece of red card stock. Cut out the circle of red card stock and have an adult use a hot glue gun to glue the card stock circle to the back of the cap. You can use the hot glue gun to secure a craft pin back to the card stock. Craft pin backs can be purchased at many craft stores. Craft pin backs have a safety pin design, but have a flat back to glue or sew on to the back of a decorative pin. These ladybirds pins are easy to make, and can be a cute present for mothers, aunts and grandmothers.
