The bond between humanity and modern technologies is a love/hate relationship for many of us. The allure of having a convenient means of communication, information and entertainment at our fingertips has resulted in an undeniable love for mobile devices and the Internet. However, the pricey end-of-the-month bills, the occasional repairs and the potential health risks bring about an utmost hatred for them. The question is, do the advantages outweigh the drawbacks?

Cell Phones Advantages

The advantage that far surpasses the rest is the fact that cell phones allow for a quicker response in emergencies. A study conducted by The Cellular Telephone and Internet Association proved that over 139,000 emergency calls are made every day. This gives police, paramedics and firefighters a better chance at success.

Text messaging is a huge benefit of cell phone usage because it is often cheaper than making a voice call, but can still convey the same message.

More modern versions of cell phones can now double as entertainment gadgets. iPhones and Blackberrys have the ability to store and play music, as well as run other apps. This makes for a two birds, one stone kind of purchase. Instead of buying an .MP3 player and a cell phone, you only need to buy one.

Cell Phones Disadvantages

Safety, however, is a major drawback from mobile devices. Talking or texting on a cell phone will likely distract you from other doings, like driving. This leaves the user vulnerable to accidents or driving infractions. In fact, cell phone distraction causes approximately 2,600 deaths and 330,000 injuries in the United States every year. Because of this, 23 states have implemented laws in an attempt to reduce mobile phone-induced injury.

There is concern that the microwaves in cell phones might induce or even cause cancer, sleep disturbance, memory problems, headaches, nausea and dizziness.

With cell phones, the days of "getting away from it all" are all but gone. Mobile devices make it difficult to remain out of touch. Callers can literally reach you anywhere, and if you opt to not answer, they can still leave a voicemail or a text message.

Internet Advantages

E-mail is an obvious perk of using the Internet. This online correspondence system allows you to send and receive messages from anywhere in the world at the simple click of a button. E-mail works exactly like writing letters, only there is no hold up from the postal service and it's completely free of charge.

The Internet also simplifies shopping. Most companies today employ the use of online stores. Using your credit card, you can meet all of your shopping needs from the convenience of your home.

The fact that the Internet is always accessible is another great aspect of this modern technology. Its 24/7 approach to service is extremely beneficial to all of its users.

Internet Disadvantages

A disadvantage of Internet use is the publication of personal information. Most websites today require data like your name, address and even credit card information. With hackers and crooks on the net, your information can occasionally be accessed by other people.

Spamming is another drawback from using the net. Spam is an influx of unsolicited e-mails, which serve no purpose other than unnecessarily ruining your experience.

Since there is very little face time on the Internet, it is a popular place for sexual predators to assume a fake identity. The anonymity of the user allows predators to sweet-talk their way into the lives of other users.
