If you need wall colours that match up with a black and white checkered floor, the world of colour is your oyster. Black and white match everything. The caveat here is one of design. A checkered floor is a busy pattern. Wall colours that are extreme may combat the pattern and create a overly rich visual effect. In addition, you may want to preserve a sense of the classical that the checkered floor can bestow and stay with more standard colours.

Monochrome Ideas

White is simple and classic; you can't go wrong with white. It may not be scintillating, but it's clean and clear. Stay away from black and dark grey. These are too much for a black and white checkered floor. Light or medium greys will add a suave feel and modern touch. Metallic colours like silver, nickel or pewter, used in moderation, are other options for a distinctive accent.

Vivid Colors

Vivid colours can excite but are also tricky. Too much, like brilliant cadmium orange, can rival the floor too powerfully. Look around for vivid hues already present in the decor to match. Deeper hues like burgundy, on the warm side, or a slightly muted teal, on the cool side, will retain a feel of fineness more than a zinging colour like magenta.

Pastel Possibilities

Pastels, tempered by a strong component of white, are less aggressive than purer, vivid hues. As such, the checkered floor will remain a stronger visual element, and there's less visual conflict. Again, matching tones that are sympathetic to tones already in the decor are an easy key to success. For instance, a bold, blood orange element could be echoed in a pastel pink wall. Cool or warm pastels work equally well. Select according to the desired environment. Iced mint, pale citron, light blue or lilac are all possibilities.

Decorative or Faux Possibilities

Decorative or faux finishes have their own colour options to match with a black and white checkered floor. Cool colour washes that hint at texture using a two-tone scheme of leather tones or stone colours provide an aged look. Faux marble, either in greys that mimic Carrara marble or warm ochre colours for yellow marble are also superb choices. Take care to select a decorative finish that is not too busy.
