Elephants are peaceful creatures that represent positive symbols of luck, strength and wisdom. Make sewing crafts of these serene creatures as toys for children to play or sleep with or to decorate rooms in your home. Use your creativity and mix fabrics, colours and prints together to make your own elephant projects.

Stuffed Toys

Make stuffed elephant toys for play or display. Use a sewing pattern or sketch a simple silhouette outline of an elephant and cut two silhouettes in fabric. Sew the silhouettes together and stuff them with pillow stuffing. Use soft, plush fabrics such as fleece, flannel or terry cloth to make stuffed elephants for babies to cuddle. Use bright children's printed fabrics to make decorative elephants to display on a shelf in a child's room. Alternatively, use more sophisticated prints to match your home's decor.

Patchwork & Applique

Create an elephant decoration with patches of fabric or cut out an elephant shape to patchwork onto various items. Lay out a sewing pattern for an elephant craft project. Cut strips of fabric and sew them together to create large enough pieces of fabric for the sewing pattern pieces. Cut the pattern pieces out of the patchwork fabric you created and sew your pattern together. As an alternative sewing technique, applique a silhouette shape of an elephant onto a shirt, blanket, tote bag or hanging tapestry. Use a patterned or solid coloured fabric.

Ornaments

Make stuffed elephant ornaments to decorate various projects. Create a silhouette of an elephant to use as a template. Be creative and use a combination of fabrics. Use coordinating printed fabrics for the body, ears, trunk and eyes. Hang the ornaments from doorknobs or cabinet knobs for decoration. Alternatively, make a baby mobile using several ornaments in a variety of colours and patterns. Stitch long satin cords to the top of the elephants. Make a cross shape with two dowels or flat wood strips; glue them together at the cross section. Hang the ornaments on the edge of the dowels and add a long satin cord to the mobile to hang from the ceiling.

Pillows

Make pillows with felt fabric. Cut and sew a felt fabric pillow in any shape you desire, stuff it and finish it. Cut elephant shapes out of felt and either hand-stitch them to the pillow or glue them on with fabric glue. Embellish the pillow by using stylish buttons or beads for the eyes. Alternatively, search for fabrics with elephant prints to make pillows for your sofa. Make a soft pillow for a baby or child to sleep with by cutting out two pieces of soft fabric in the shape of an elephant and lightly stuffing it with batting to make a flat pillow.
