Popsicle Stick Craft Projects for Teens

Updated November 21, 2016

People of all ages can enjoy arts and craft projects that will get them thinking creatively while satisfying a need. Teenagers especially can thrive from putting their creative skills to the test by making useful or decorative objects for around the home. Popsicle sticks are a versatile and very affordable material for many arts and crafts projects. With a few decorative tools and some other household supplies, you can make any number of different creations.

Popsicle sticks can be used to make a variety of models. For example, if the sticks are cut or filed into different shapes, you can create models of boats, cars or even homes. These can then be painted or covered with paper or fabric to create unique and decorative displays.

Recipe Card Holder

If you are a teenager who loves to cook, a decorative and functional recipe card holder like the one described on the Kaboose website will help you to keep track of your favourite culinary creations. To create the holder, glue 12 Popsicle sticks together along the side to create a backing. Stack several sticks along either side of the backing and glue in place. Glue a row of Popsicle sticks over the front of the side stacks and finish by connecting some sticks along the bottom. Once the glue has dried, you can slide cards into the holder.

Door Hangers

A teenager's room is often her personal oasis. She may see it as the one place where she can truly be herself. Decorative door hangers will help her claim her space as her own. To make a door hanger out of Popsicle sticks, glue the sticks together along the sides until they are about 3 1/2 inches in width. Add three Popsicle sticks along the top to create a handle shape to connect the hanger to the door knob. Once the glue is dry, decorate the door hanger to your liking.

Picture Frames

Decorate an ordinary picture frame with Popsicle sticks. You can even use these sticks to create a three-dimensional matt for the photo along the interior of the frame. Glue the sticks in place ,then allow them to dry fully before decorating with paint, paper or markers.

Popsicle sticks can be used to make bookmarks for the teenager who loves to read. Simply glue two sticks together lengthwise. Cut a stick into 1 inch pieces and glue a piece to the top of your glued sticks. Paint or decorate the bookmark as desired. Attach ribbon to the top of the bookmark.

Flower planters will look more festive when covered with Popsicle sticks. Have your teen simply hot glue the sticks around the base of the planter. If the planter is square, attach the sticks horizontally. If it is curved, attach them vertically. Paint and decorate as desired.
