When Halloween comes around each year, many people choose to dress up in traditional costumes like superhero costumes or princesses outfits. On the contrary, some others choose outrageous and unique costumes. One unique costume you can make yourself is a salad costume. A salad costume is fairly easy and is sure to make you stand out in the costumed crowd.

Starting the Basic Outfit

To start the salad costume you need solid green clothing that old or used. The solid green clothing provides a great background to the other salad items that will go on the costume. A solid T-shirt and trousers are all you need and they do not need to match. Next, you need a solid green, plastic or fabric tablecloth. This will be the lettuce in the salad. Cut the tablecloth into large strips and wrap them around the person who is wearing the costume.

Adding the Vegetables

Depending on what type of salad you want to make, there are several ways you can add decorations to this salad costume. Red bouncing balls make wonderful cherry tomato replicas. You can use craft foam to make several types of vegetables: black foam circles for olives, red foam for tomato bits, pink foam squares as chopped ham, orange foam strips as shredded carrots or cheese and whatever else you can image. You can also make croutons out of cut-up upholstery foam. Glue your own combinations of these items onto the costume.

Hat, Shoes and Accesories

You can use a plastic or wooden salad bowl or container as a hat for this costume. You can also decorate your shoes with fake, plastic vegetables or wear disposable, plastic salad containers on your feet. Make a giant fork out of cardboard spray-painted with silver spray paint. Also, you can carry around a salt shaker or a bottle of salad dressing while you wear your salad costume.

Other Decorations and Ideas

Make your salad costume fit with a particular type of salad by specific "ingredients." For instance, you can make a Caesar salad costume by adding white foam packing peanuts as Parmesan cheese, plastic Easter eggs, and fake fish toys as anchovies. You can also make the salad costume in a "bowl." You will need a small, plastic kiddie pool. Cut a hole large enough for the wearer to fit in. Glue on two straps of fabric or another materials so that the person can wear the straps across their shoulders and hold up the kiddie pool. Place all of the salad decorations into the pool.
