Tea light candles are a good way to give your home an attractive glow. While small tea candles are often very inexpensive, their holders can be a bit more costly. If you are planning to display a large number of tea lights for a party or another event, consider choosing an inexpensive holder for them. You can even get crafty and make tea light cups with items you might already have on hand.

Jars

Use small jelly jars or baby food jars to hold your tea light candles. Remove the labels from the jars and clean them thoroughly. You could leave the jars clean, or decorate them. For example, cut a strip of decorative craft paper that is the width of the jar and attach it to the jar using double-sided tape. Another idea is to decorate the jars by simply tying a ribbon around them. Place the tea light inside and light it.

Wood

For a more rustic-looking tea light holder, use a piece of wood. For example, choose a thick slab of wood from a home improvement centre or even a chunk of a log. Use a drill press to hollow out an area in the wood that is just large enough to fit a tea light candle inside. Cut the pieces of wood just large enough for one candle before creating the hollow area, or use a large piece of wood and create several tea light cups.

Fruits and Vegetables

People often use tea lights as an element for a table centrepiece. Consider giving your tea light decoration a natural look by using fruits and vegetables to hold the candles. Choose fruits or vegetables with tough, thick skins for this idea, such as watermelons, sweet potatoes or pumpkins. Use a knife to hollow out a section of the fruit or vegetable that is large enough to fit the tea light inside. Be sure the hollowed area is just deep enough so that the tea light can sit inside it because if it is too deep, the candle's flame will burn the fruit or vegetable when you light it.

Plant Dish

Purchase terra cotta plant dishes from your local garden centre and use them for your tea light holders. These dishes are made to go underneath terra cotta pots and catch the water that runs beneath them. Choose terra cotta dishes that are made for the small terra cotta pots and are appropriately sized for a tea light. Leave the terra cotta plant dishes plain or decorate them with acrylic paints.
