A carport is an alternative to a garage that can be added to your home, property or existing garage. Wood, metal, plastic and stone are some of the options you'll find when choosing a design. Whether you build one yourself or purchase a pre-designed carport, you must first decide on the overall look. Either match the existing decor of your home and garage, or choose a different design and dress it up with shrubs and vines.

Pergola

For additional or seasonal parking build a pergola style carport. Attach the pergola to the side of your garage. While pergolas can be built many ways, the most popular variation includes a fully covered roof to protect your vehicle from the elements. You can build the pergola from the same materials used on a previously built deck. If the deck is visible from the front of the house, the pergola can be built off of the other side to create balance. A pergola carport can be tailor-made to fit any vehicle.

Freestanding Carport

Freestanding carports are commonly found made of metal or plastic. This type of structure is often closed on all sides. They come in a variety of sizes, shapes and colours, making them an ideal choice for properties with sufficient space. Freestanding carports often have their own look and may not match the decor of your home. However, dress it up with plants, shrubs or vines found elsewhere on your property and before long it will fit right in. The other option is to build one yourself.

Patio and Carport

Create a carport with a patio area to maximise your space. A carport with back alley access can be dressed up in the front with a patio area. Divide the space with a decorative wall, unified with a single roof. You can build the carport area with a solid roof, but widen the slats for the patio side to allow sunlight to filter through to the seating area. Add benches or a bistro style patio set and a few planter boxes to the patio side.

Other Ideas

Carports can also be designed with more than one parking space. Whether you choose to build dividers between each spot or create one open space, options are available to suit any requirements. Larger carports are ideal for big families or small businesses that require parking alternatives. Another idea is to pair the carport with a greenhouse or a garden shed. With some good design and creative planning the carport can add an architectural focal point to your property.
