Checkout operators fill approximately fifty per cent of supermarket jobs. However, many supermarkets employ supervisors and managers in a number of higher-paid positions, including sales supervisor, food preparation supervisor, assistant manager and shop manager. Although checkout operators average fewer than 30 hours weekly, most supervisors work at least full time. Factors affecting their average salaries include the type of supervisory position and the job location.
