Students dress in diverse outfits and costumes for homecoming week. Each day typically has a different theme, and Character Day is a common choice for high schools. This is when the students, and sometimes the teachers, dress up as their favourite characters. The results are usually original, because not everyone likes the same characters, and frequently hilarious.

Movies are one of the first stops for characters. You can go as a movie character all by yourself or get some of your friends to dress up as characters from the same movie with you. With a group of friends, the characters are usually recognisable. As a lone character, you should pick something obvious if you do not want people asking who you are. The costumes should also conform to the school dress code.

Television is harder to pull off as most television characters tend to dress as everyday people, but that also means you do not have to spend a lot of money on a costume. Some shows, such as science fiction shows or shows with supernatural elements, feature distinctive-looking characters.

Dressing as a character in a book gives you more creativity than any other field. Here, you decide what the character really looks like. The author has given you a basic concept. You can take it from there. Some of your friends might have read the same book, so ask them to dress up as complementary characters. People will ask you who you are, so carry a copy of the book to help them figure it out. You might impress a teacher if it's a book you've been assigned in class.

You can display your nostalgic side by dressing up as your favourite Saturday morning cartoon character from when you were younger. These costumes might take more money and imagination, especially if you are dressing up as a nonhuman character. You do not have to limit yourself to Saturday morning cartoons, either. Many products use cartoon characters as logos, which you can dress as.

Superheroes will never go out of style, whether you are a boy or a girl. And there are plenty of options. Most superheroes have distinctive looks to them, so you will not have to worry about telling people who you are --- unless you choose an obscure superhero, such as The Shadow (ask your grandad).
