A bite of luscious, creamy cheesecake paired with crunchy graham cracker crust is delicious on its own but cheesecake can also be adorned with a variety of toppings, which lend their assorted textures and tastes to this dessert.

The fresh taste of fruit adds a natural, wholesome sweetness to the cheesecake that may make you think you're actually eating healthy. While cheesecake drowned in a fruit topping is surely against the rules of most diets, fruit topping transforms an ordinary cheesecake into a perfect treat any time of year. Sprinkle a layer of fresh strawberries, blueberries or mixed berries. A syrup concocted of cherries or strawberries adds a sticky sweetness. For the autumn, try topping the cheesecake with warmed, cinnamon apple slices.

Sauce and Syrup

A drizzle of syrup and sauce goes a long way when it comes to jazzing up a cheesecake. Chocolate fanatics will beam upon seeing a cheesecake that wears a layer of chocolate fudge or chocolate ganache. A chocolate cheesecake doused in chocolate sauce or fudge will be a dream come true for chocolate lovers. Caramel or butterscotch syrup imparts a sweet, rich flavour. Don't stop at one sauce: add chocolate and caramel for a flavourful treat.

The crunchy texture of nuts adds an interesting layer of texture that comes in contrast to the creamy softness of cheesecake. While a spread of sliced plain almonds is sure to be tasty, a praline, streusel, brittle or other seasoned nut topping makes a special treat. Pecan praline topping, with its gooey taste and sweet, cinnamon taste complements plain cheesecake, as well as pumpkin cheesecake. For an easy nutty topping, break up pieces of peanut brittle on top of a cheesecake.

Cookies and Candies

If cheesecake isn't sweet enough, top it off with other dessert items. A sprinkle of crushed Oreos gives the cheesecake the flavour of the chocolate and cream cookies, as well as a nice crunch. Other cookies, from mints to ginger snaps, also contribute their flavours and texture. Candy, too, makes a great topping. Peanut butter lovers, will look forward to sampling a cheesecake topped with pieces of peanut butter cups. Even candy bars can make a delicious topping.
