The Bible is full of stories about angels, and many of those stories are easy for young kids to understand. Reading them the story and then offering a craft or an object lesson about the angels will further help the kids retain the information you want to teach them.
Give a general overview of angels in the Bible. Angels had many different types of jobs or belonged to a specific category, such as cherubim or seraphim. Some of the angels even had names, such as Gabriel and Michael. Read several passages of Scripture that discuss angels or where angels are involved in the story. If the kids are of reading age, give individual kids verses to read aloud. Ask the kids what they think angels are and if they are involved in our lives today. A few verses you could read include Luke 20:36, Revelation 5:11 and Matthew 24:36.
The Christmas Story
The Christmas story is one of the most popular and well-known stories in the Bible that includes angels -- the angel Gabriel came to Mary to tell her she would have a son and to call his name Jesus. One of the things you can discuss with your kids is that different angels had different jobs. Gabriel's job as an angel was to deliver messages. Every time Gabriel is mentioned in the Bible he is delivering some sort of message. The Scripture passage for this lesson is found in Luke 1:26-38.
Balaam was a man in the Bible who God told to do something and he did not do it, at least not right away. Balaam thought he could disobey God, but God used Balaam's donkey to show him he could not disobey. Balaam was riding along on his donkey when the donkey suddenly stopped. Balaam hit the donkey to try to get him to keep going. What Balaam did not know was that the donkey could see an angel blocking his path, not allowing him to go farther. When the donkey started to speak, Balaam listened. God opened Balaam's eyes and allowed him to see the angel as well. Find this story in Numbers 22.
Jacob was running away from home to find safety from his brother who wanted to kill him. What Jacob did not know was that God would protect him. While he was sleeping one night, Jacob dreamed of angels going up and down the stairs of heaven. During this dream Jacob learnt that the Lord was going to give him the land on which he was sleeping and that he would have many descendants. When Jacob awoke, he built an altar to the Lord there. This story is found in Genesis 28.
