A loved one deployed overseas can be away for months at a time and have very few comforts of home. Show your soldier how much you care by sending a fun and unique theme package with a personal touch. Receiving any mail from home is sure to bring a smile to any soldier's face, but games, treats and reminders of home are a fun way to warm the heart.

Sports Theme

Feature the soldier's favourite sport or team as the focal point of the package. Send a T-shirt or hat with his favourite team's logo. Purchase a pennant or flag so he can proudly display his team in his living quarters. Provide reading material, such as current magazines, related to his sport of choice. If he has a special snack he enjoys while watching sports, send his favourite brand of crisps or beef jerky. Sealed store-bought products stay fresh longer.

Entertainment Package

If the soldier is a movie buff, send DVDs of his favourite movies or the most recent releases. Box sets of TV shows also help pass the time. Check if there is a new release of his favourite video game but first make sure he has access to a video game console. Magazines, books or a new computer game are also entertainment options. Another idea is an iPod or MP3 player with pre-loaded songs or podcasts, along with a gift card to purchase new music online. Include popcorn, candy or cookies to go along with the new entertainment.

Comforts of Home Package

If the soldier is overseas, prepare a package with some comforts of home. Select a few personal photos, along with postcards written by family and friends to remind the soldier that everyone misses him. Purchase his favourite snacks or prepare home-made sweets to pack in the box. If the soldier is a significant other, spray perfume or cologne on a few items of clothing to remind him of you. Soldiers often appreciate having fresh T-shirts, shorts and socks. Send along an item of clothing with your hometown's name on it to remind him of the folks at home.

Game Theme

To keep soldiers entertained, send a box with various games for personal use and to share with the group. Books filled with crossword puzzles or Sudoku come in handy during down time. A pack of cards goes a long way, too. Most games today have travel versions so select a few adult-friendly games for him to play with others. If you're willing to spend some extra money, a personal game console with a few games provides endless entertainment.
