While each home has specific needs, there are some staple cleaning responsibilities that are needed in nearly every household. Keeping a list of all the chores that need to be done around the home will give you an easy way to make sure it all gets done. It will also give you a list of info to delegate to others if you are lucky enough to have help with your task. As you clean, remember to check off the tasks as you complete them.

The kitchen is used for preparing, serving and sometimes eating food, but this can be a messy endeavour. Chores in the kitchen include washing the dishes or loading the dishwasher, unloading the dishwasher once the dishes are clean, disinfecting countertops after food preparation is complete, sweeping and mopping the floors and cleaning the oven and range surface. Also necessary are cleaning and organising storage areas such as the cabinets and pantry.

Some of the most difficult or time-consuming chores take place in the bathroom. These chores include washing out the tub, scrubbing the sinks, removing mildew, washing or disinfecting the shower curtain, sweeping and mopping the floor, cleaning the mirrors and any other glass surface, cleaning and disinfecting the vanity surface and cabinets and scrubbing the toilet bowl and seat.

Living Rooms

Common living areas throughout the home are the living room, family room, den or office. These all need to be organised and generally tidied. A more thorough cleaning that includes sweeping, mopping, vacuuming rugs and carpeting and dusting the furniture and window treatments should take place once a week or at least twice a month. Upholstered furniture requires vacuuming or thorough cleaning several times over the course of the year to keep it looking clean.

Bedrooms are usually the responsibility of the family members who use them. General duties in these spaces include dusting, sweeping, vacuuming, washing linens, making the bed and general organising and tidying. Closets should be clean and organised as well.

Outdoor spaces are enjoyable to have, but they come with some added responsibilities. This could include cleaning and organising the garage or shed, raking leaves, mowing the lawn, tending and weeding gardens, shovelling snow and washing vehicles.

Laundry tasks include sorting, washing, drying, ironing, folding and storing clothing items. Rugs, bedding, towels and other household linens also fall under this category for regular cleaning.
