With its bright colours, no-fray edges and compatibility with craft glue, felt has long been a favourite fabric for making Christmas stockings. Look for felt and felt appliques at craft shops and fabric shops; two 22 by 27 cm (9-inch-by-11-inch) sheets of felt will make one medium or two small stockings. For large stockings, purchase felt by the yard.

Basic felt stocking

To make a basic red stocking, sketch a sock shape on a piece of felt with chalk or marker, or use one of the many stocking templates found online. Make the outline or template a bit bigger than you want. Cut the shape out and sew around the edge by hand or with a machine, leaving the top edge open. Turn the inside out by pulling the toe out through the open end. Sew a felt loop to the top back of the stocking for hanging, and embellish as desired.

Kids' craft felt stocking

For a simple project for children or those who don't sew, cut identical small or medium-sized stocking shape out of felt in the exact size you want. Have kids line the edges, except for the top, with white glue. Lay a loop of yarn at the top corner opposite from the toe to make a hanger, then sandwich two stocking shapes together. Kids can embellish the stockings with glitter, paint and felt letters and shapes.

Mini felt stockings

Tiny felt stockings make cute ornaments that can double as holders for tiny-sized gifts such as folded cash or jewellery. Cut out 5 to 10 cm (2- to 4-inch) stocking shapes and either glue or sew them together with a yarn or felt hanger. These tiny stockings can be embellished with ribbon around the top, shaped glitter and, if desired, an initial. Hang mini-stockings on the tree or fill with a candy and give them as party favours or to surprise guests.

Embellishing felt stockings

Felt takes glue better than many other types of fabric. Try to keep any glue you use on felt out of sight, with the exception of glitter glue. Use glitter glue to write names on felt stockings or to draw snowflakes or other designs. Felt shapes work well for embellishing felt stockings -- you can either cut out the shapes yourself, or buy precut felt appliques. Apply a few dots of glue to the felt cutouts and press gently in place. To finish, sew or glue trim around the top edge of the stocking.
