An infant baptism in the Catholic church serves two purposes. Baptism in the Catholic church washes away original sin and is also a celebration of the infant's birth and life. Baptismal gifts are often in a religious theme or help the family plan for the child's future. The event marks the child's entrance to the Catholic faith.

A baby's first Bible often comes at baptism for Catholic infants. Even though the child is too young to read, the Bible marks the entrance to the church. Often children's Bibles are given for baptisms. Children's Bibles often contain colourful illustrations and come in a wide range of colours, making these Bibles different than adult Bibles. A Bible embossed with the child's name and baptism date is especially meaningful.

A rosary is a gift for the child's religious future. Rosaries are beads strung together that are used during Catholic prayer. The rosary usually also includes a cross. Buying a rosary can be the start of a family tradition. Rosaries are often handed down from generation to generation. Rosaries are made from many different materials and range from simple in design to intricate. For a female infant, a rosary with pearls is appropriate while a silver rosary fits for a boy.

A small cross is a good way to mark the day. A cross in soft pastel colours, appropriate for an infant's nursery, can be hung or placed on a shelf. A simple traditional cross made from wood also works. Crosses are a symbol of Christianity, so giving one marks the religious importance of the day. You can also purchase porcelain crosses, but as the child ages, these are more likely to break.

Other Gifts

Also common is to give money to the infant. Cash or stocks, bonds or other investment products in the infant's parent's name are appropriate. Family members often give financial gifts for the child's future. Financial gifts aren't the only other gifts that are appropriate for Catholic baptisms. For example, giving an infant toy that the infant can play with or keepsakes like stuffed animals and snow globes also are appropriate.
