Halloween is the one day a year where children and adults alike can dress up as their favourite characters. Many young girls enjoy dressing in traditionally feminine fancy dresses, such as fairies and princesses, as well as television and movie characters or ghostly figures. There are many eye-catching costume options for young girls between the ages of 10 and 12.

A beautiful princess is an iconic costume for girls of all ages. Purchase one of the many princess costumes available at Halloween stores, or make one yourself using shiny, shimmery fabric. Pair the flowing princess dress with sparkly make-up, a shimmery headband and a tiara. The addition of wings transforms this into a fairy princess costume.

A witch is a traditional Halloween costume that suits girls who prefer a more sinister look. A long, black dress can be paired with a pointy black hat, black boots or shoes, and of course the characteristic broomstick. This costume can be made extra creepy with a large, fake witch's nose, witch fingers and ghoulish grey or green face paint.

Historical figures

Historical figures often appeal to girls between the ages of 10 and 12. There are many options if your daughter is looking to emulate a character or era in time; suggest, for example, Pocahontas, a hippie from the 60s, a gypsy, or Cleopatra. These costumes are relatively easy to make and can also be found at costume shops.

Movie, television or music stars

Many young girls relate to, and idolise, their favourite singers or characters in their favourite movies and television shows. Your 10- or 12-year-old daughter will love dressing up as Hannah Montana, for example. And while these costumes are available in shops, it is simple to emulate looks from the movie with clothing items you already own. You can also suggest Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga or a character from "High School Musical."

A vampire costume is another look for girls who favour the spookier aspects of Halloween. Children can choose to dress up as a girlie vampire with a black dress and cape or a more traditional vampire, with black trousers, a white button-up shirt and a black cape. The make-up and hair are what make this costume; pair black, slicked-back hair with white face paint, fangs and drops of "blood."
