Throw a farewell get together, whether it a small gathering or large party, for a friend, family member, co-worker or neighbour who is moving away or switching occupations. A good farewell for someone you care about combines a good balance of positive thoughts for the next big step as well as reminiscing over the time you have spent together.

Gift Ideas

Give your friend or loved one a farewell gift that sums up your feelings for her. Have the gift personalised or customised by engraving it, adding personal photos from your time together or with a thoughtful poem or handwritten card. Customisable gifts include plaques with messages or poems, photo albums or scrapbooks, other photo gifts such as coffee mugs or mouse pads and many other engravable items.

Work Party

Throw your co-worker a farewell party at work by having a potluck lunch. Have each co-worker bring in a cooked or bought dish to add to the potluck after asking permission to have this farewell luncheon. Aside from lunch, other ideas are to go for drinks after work with fellow co-workers and friends or take your afternoon break together to give him his farewell gifts.

Casual Farewell Party

Have a small and intimate farewell party for her. Casual farewell parties can be in a public place such as a restaurant, park or beach or at somebody's home. Invite her closest friends and family to the casual gathering for food, drinks, gifts and conversation. Assign somebody to take plenty of pictures for a photo memory book or scrapbook to send her off with.

Surprise Farewell Party

For a larger group of people, throw him a surprise farewell party with all of his friends, family and co-workers who are going to miss having him around. Be sure to plan it at least one to two weeks before he plans on leaving in case he will be busy close to departure time with travelling arrangements. Have one person invite him to dinner and bring him to the venue instead. Rent out a large room in a local restaurant or plan to have the surprise party in someone's home. Schedule at least three hours for the party which may include a meal or snacks, drinks, gift giving and reminiscing.

Themed Farewell Party

As an alternative option for decorating for the party, plan a themed farewell party. The theme is typically related to where she plans on going. If she is going off to college on the West Coast, plan a beach-themed party with palm trees, coconuts and lei's, like a typical luau party. Make classic West Coast foods like fish tacos which are a favourite in California. Have people dress up ready for the beach in shorts, tank tops and swimming costumes if it is a pool party.
