According to a 2005 online survey, Halloween ranks as the second favourite holiday with Americans. While dressing in costume and carving pumpkins is part of the fun, getting scared is also a component of the festivities. Jeffrey Goldstein, a professor of social and organizational psychology, says that one of the attractions of horror movies is the adrenalin rush produced by being frightened. There are many scary things to do at night on Halloween to help achieve that rush.

Studios often release scary movies close to Halloween. Sometimes theatres even run horror movie festivals that time of year. Both present opportunities for scary fun. Even if there aren't any good frightening films at the local theatre, you can still scare yourself with movies. Consider having a private horror movie fest. Rent or purchase a number of scary films, invite people over (costumed or not) and let the festivities begin.

Haunted Attractions

Haunted houses and other frightening attractions pop up all over around Halloween. Most communities have some kind of haunted house. Making the rounds from one to another can prove a fun activity on Halloween night. Those fortunate enough to have access to an amusement park might have additional opportunities. Many theme parks are remade around Halloween with frights in mind. Some parks may have special events on the rides, costumed spooks running around or some combination of the two.

Ghost Tours

Ghost stories abound in most communities. Rumours are floated about haunted locations or spirit sightings in nearly every town. Ghost tours are offered in many cities, giving locals and out-of-town guests the opportunity to visit places reputedly haunted and hear the stories about them. If no tours are offered in your area, you might want to organise one. Research stories about haunted places in the region, check with authorities about the legal ramifications and create your ghost tour.

Story Telling

The human mind is capable of creating exceptionally frightening images. In fact, the pictures we conjure in our minds are often scarier than anything on the movie screen, because we each create what is most frightening to our individual sensibilities. For this reason, storytelling remains an effectively scary experience. Gather a group of people and sit in the dark telling ghost stories. Those with abundant creativity can make up their own. Others can use a flashlight to read stories from a book.
