Show off your ears by wearing earrings that were fashionable in the '80s. Whether pierced or not, you'll draw attention with earrings from this decade. The '80s brought bright, neon colours, eccentric items such as feathers and beading to earring designs that were not ring shaped at all.

Big, Bold Earrings

The '80s style was loud and outrageous, and it was reflected in the jewellery. Big earrings were in style for women. The earring materials ranged from silver and gold to plastic. Nothing was off-limits. While the earrings were sold in pairs, women often mixed with other sets. For example, a woman might have worn a large, blue rhinestone stud in one ear and a long pink feather in the other ear. Other options for earrings included large plastic hoops, metal hoops and dangling earrings with rhinestones, beads and shells.

Metal Cuff Earrings

Cuff earrings were not traditional earrings; in fact, you did not wear a cuff on your ear lobe. The cuff was worn along the upper edge of your ear and attached to the cartilage. Ear cuffs consisted of a small metal cuff shape that was applied to the ear and then gently crimped down to stay put. Most cuffs were made of metal; however, real silver and gold cuffs were available. The cuffs often contained a design or rhinestones attached to them for decoration.

Single Stud Earrings

Men in the '80s took part in fashioning their ears by wearing one stud in their left ears only. The choice of ear sometimes indicated sexual orientation. The single post earring was made of gold or silver and contained various gems such as diamonds, rubies and emeralds.

Clip-On Earrings

The clip-on was a popular choice for women who refused to pierce their ears, or who had allergic reactions to post earrings. Most styles of earrings were available in the clip-on option, and those that were not could easily be transformed into clip-ons with kits available for purchase. Like other styles of earrings, clip-ons were well-known for one particular style known as the cluster. Cluster earrings consisted of a cluster of beads and gems tightly woven together into a ball-like shape.
