The sakura, more commonly known as the cherry blossom tree, is famous for its beautiful petals and short lifespan. Due to their common association with love and the importance of life, cherry blossoms make a perfect wedding decoration. Since they are associated with Asian cultures, cherry blossom trees can add an Asian feel to your wedding.

Symbolism

In Japanese cultures, the cherry blossom symbolises the brief, transient nature of life. Unlike most trees, cherry blossoms are in bloom for only a few weeks and revert to their plain, green leaves after the blossoms fall. The blossom is a popular symbol of the east to Americans and it is found in many American interpretations of Asian cultures, such as the Disney movie Mulan. In some cultures, the pink of the blossom symbolises love. Cherry blossoms patterns can be found on a variety of products, from paper lanterns to wall art.

Outdoor Wedding

For a wedding that celebrates the beauty of cherry blossoms, plan an outdoor wedding during cherry blossom season. If you live in an area with many cherry blossoms, such as Washington DC, you may be able to plan the wedding at any park. If you live in an area where the blossoms are rarer, such as Southern California, plan the wedding at a botanical garden. In most cases, you must request special permission if you are decorating public land or land you do not own.

Lights

Compliment the simplicity of the cherry blossom tree with a string of Christmas lights. Slide the lights around the trunk or branches of the tree. You may wish to string the lights between cherry blossom trees to increase the illumination in an area. String paper lanterns between trees for a Japanese themed wedding or plant electric lanterns down the aisle to illuminate the walkway. You may wish to place candles along the aisle for a simple glow or to hang lights from the branches of a tree for additional illumination.

Other Tree Decorations

If your wedding is during the day, make use of the sunlight with colourful, highly visible decorations. Hang wind chimes from the cherry blossom tree branches to add beautiful sounds to your wedding. Add hanging stained glass images to the branches of the tree for extra colours and pictures. You may wish to use Christmas tree ornaments as one of the decorations for your tree. Wrap tinsel around the trunk of a cherry blossom tree for extra shine. Try to keep your decorations simple to avoid detracting from the elegance of the cherry blossom tree.

Cherry Blossom Themed Decorations

If you are unable to include actual cherry blossom trees in your wedding, use cherry blossom themed favours and decorations. Purchase an LED cherry blossom tree to add soft lights and a unique decoration. Use a screen decorated with cherry blossoms to separate areas at your reception or give your bridesmaids cherry blossom bouquets. Decorate the aisle with cherry blossom petals or stuff silk cherry blossom flowers into the vases at the reception. Provide party favours with cherry blossom scents, such as soap or perfume.
