The majority of Xbox 360 games are locked to work only in a specific region. For example, Japanese games are not playable on North American consoles. This contrasts with the PlayStation 3, where the vast majority of games are region free. However, there are an increasing number of Xbox 360 games released without a region encoding. These games include many of the system's major titles including action adventure, first person shooter and party games.

Action Adventure

A number of region-free action adventure games are available for the Xbox 360, including: Alan Wake, Army of Two: The 40th Day, Assassin's Creed and Assassin's Creed 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Bayonetta, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, Dead Rising 2, Devil May Cry 4, Dark Void, Dead Space 2, Enslaved, Fracture, Gears of War 1 and 2, Kayne and Lynch 1 and 2, Naruto: Rise of a Ninja, Ninja Gaiden 2, Resident Evil 5, Splatterhouse and Stranglehold.

First Person Shooters

First person shooter (FPS) games are some of the most popular games on the Xbox 360. The following FPS games are region-free on the Xbox 360: Bioshock 1 and 2, Borderlands, Brothers in Arms, Bulletstorm, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 1 and 2, Crysis 2, The Darkness, Fear 2, Halo 3 and Halo Reach, Left 4 Dead 1 and 2, and Wolfenstein.

Role-Playing Games (RPGs)

A number of prominent role-playing games for Microsoft's console have been released free of region encoding. The region-free RPGs for the Xbox 360 include: Blue Dragon, Dragon Age 1 and 2, Fable 2 and Fable 3, Fallout 3, Mass Effect 1 and 2, Resonance of Fate and Sacred 2.

Music and Party Games

With the recent release of the Kinect motion detection controller for the Xbox 360, music and party games have become more popular than ever on the console. Some of the games released in these genres lack region locking. These include: The Beatles: Rock Band, Biggest Loser Ultimate, Dance Central, Disney Sing It: High School Musical 3, DJ Hero, Guitar Hero World Tour, Guitar Hero 5, Lips, Motion Sports, Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing and Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise.

Fighting Games

Fighting games are popular both in single and multiplayer modes. Beat em ups on the Microsoft 360 without region locking include: UFC Personal Trainer, Fight Night: Round 4, Fighters Uncaged, King of Fighters XII, Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, Soul Calibur IV, Street Fighter IV, UFC Undisputed 2010 and WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2010.
