Women's clothing and fashions have changed through the decades, to fit in with social and economic changes. However, the music scene has also influenced women's fashions. The 1980s brought an array of music and fashion styles that seemed exaggerated at times, but were fitting for the 1980s decade. Women chose colours and fashion trends that fit their lifestyle, as well as their preference in music.
Some popular styles in the mid-1980s were derived from the movie "Pretty in Pink." The preppy look and lace fashion styles featured women in blazers, cuffed at the sleeves worn over polo shirts or with flowing silk blouses and fashion pearls. Dressy slacks and skirts were often paired with silk blouses and blazers, as well as bright coloured high-heeled shoes in soft or patent leather. Penny loafers were worn with relaxed denim outfits as well. Madonna greatly influenced 1980s styles as well with accessories such as lace gloves, opaque nylons and big hair bows.
Country-style fashion featured women in fringe and rhinestone embellished blouses, bags and boots that could be worn for virtually any occasion during the mid-1980s. Well-fitted stonewash Wrangler and Guess jeans were paired with colourful rhinestone T-shirts and buttone-down blouses, as well as classic cowgirl boots. Fringed, waist high, leather and denim jackets often accompanied women's country-western outfits. Country fashions wre not complete without blue eye, pink lip-glossand large teased hairstyles doused in hairspray.
Mid-1980s rock fashion depended on the type of rock music that was favoured. Female heavy metal fashions consisted of tight silhouette jeans that zipped in the back rather than the front, as well as the back of each ankle. Tight, one-piece body suit tops were paired with leather jackets. Punk rock females sported straight leg jeans or tight spandex mini skirts with rows of studded belts. Sleeveless band T-shirts, short hair and Mohawk hairstyles complimented female punk styles, along with leather boots and safety pins.
Hip Hop Clothing
Although hip-hop was introduced in the early 1980s, hip-hop fashion certainly left its mark on the women's fashion world. Female fans of hip-hop music were known for wearing bright coloured skinny jeans, such as red and yellow denim jeans, with high-top sneakers or soft knee-high leather boots. Long-sleeved jersey knit tops and colourful T-shirts with shoulder pads were accessorised with long gold chains and large hoop earrings. Women added leather flight, or bomber jackets decorated with colours of the African flag, to show their solidarity of the growing African-American culture as well.
