Very short men's haircuts range from an inch or less of hair on the head to completely shaved looks. Short haircuts are worn for any number of reasons including the need for a low-maintenance look, keeping cool in the summer or to hide the signs of balding. Whatever the reason for a short haircut, try starting with a cut that is a little longer and making adjustments as desired, particularly for those new to short cuts.

Crew Haircut

The crew cut is a type of haircut with two major versions, the American and European version. The American version of this cut often features tapered hair on the sides and in the back with hair up to 1 inch in length on top. European crew cuts generally refer to cuts that are about a 1/4 inch all the way around the head; though this version may also be tapered on the sides and in the back.

Buzz Cut

Barbers who perform buzz cuts often use clippers free of attachments. The cut gets its name from the sound the clippers make when the cut is being performed. Buzz cuts come in assorted lengths, such as leaving more hair on the top of the head for styling. A very easy style to maintain, buzz cuts dry nearly instantly post-shower and help keep men cool in the summer. Wearing a buzz cut in the summertime does require a bit of caution to avoid sunburns.

Landing Strip

Landing-strip haircuts refer to the portion of the scalp that is seen in a very short haircut. Hair is closely buzzed if not completely shaved on the sides leaving hair on the top of the head only in a strip of assorted lengths depending on preference.

Military Cuts

There are a few military cuts which are worn by officers and civilians alike. One cut is the induction cut, or the cut given to new recruits. The cut is not even around the entire head, but rather the sides are closer cut with more hair left around the top of the head in an almost dome-like shape. This cut is also referred to as a burr cut. The military's regulation haircut is a highly tapered cut where hair is closely cropped on the sides and lower back though the top is left longer. There are variations of this cut including shorter hair on the top of the head.
