Prom and evening party events serve as a source of much excitement and planning for children. Finding the perfect dress can sometimes take time as there are many styles to consider. Here are a few varieties of evening party and prom dresses for children.

Maxi Dresses

Maxi dresses are perfect for any formal occasion. They are elegant, classy and appropriate for any age group. Maxi dresses can be purchased in ankle- or floor-length styles. Formal evening gowns are typically made of materials such as silk and chiffon. Because of their popularity, they can be purchased in any colour of the rainbow and at most local dress shops. Purchase one with shoulder straps and a neckline that reaches the collar bone when buying for children.

Mini Dresses

Mini dresses are a fun and youthful form of evening wear. They can be found in all lengths above the knee, but for young children look for a dress that lands no more than two inches above the knee. They can be found with spaghetti straps, thick straps, cap sleeves and full, rounded necklines. Finding one with thick straps is a good idea as it helps to balance out the look of a short dress. Select a mini dress with a full skirt for a youthful feel. The look can be customised to suit the child's tastes buy pairing the dress with some leggings or tights. This allows for more comfort as well.

Tea-Length Dresses

Tea-length dresses serve as a great compromise between the maxi and mini dresses. Tea-length dresses feature a hemline that lands just below the knee. They typically have full, a-line skirts. They can be purchased in any number of styles -- similar to the maxi and mini dresses. If you find a maxi dress with a great pattern and fabric but feel the style is a bit too overwhelming on your child, simply bring the hemline up a bit yourself or have a seamstress do so to create a tea-length dress.

Vintage Dresses

A vintage dress can guarantee your child a one-of-a-kind look. Look through the dress sections of vintage and thrift stores. Vintage stores often carry certified vintage dresses from all eras. Some vintage stores even offer a program that allows customers to borrow dresses for an occasion. Great dresses can often be found for a fraction of the original cost, helping you save money while creating a special look for your child. If you find a great vintage dress in the women's section but it is a bit large on the child, have it altered to fit her.
