A fun way to celebrate and prepare for Christmas with kids is by making crafts. Children can develop their creativity by making their own crafts and gifts, and gain a sense of accomplishment when they complete them. There are many Christmas crafts children might enjoy, but sewing crafts are great for older children. Sewing is a skill that children will use all their life, whether by making crafts or when fixing a ripped piece of clothing.

Making stockings is an easy and fun craft for children. They can also be easily decorated and personalised, using buttons, pom-pom balls, ribbon, jingle bells or other embellishments. Kids can use fabric markers or permanent markers to write the name of the person the stocking is for. To make the stocking, draw a picture of a basic stocking on card stock and cut two pieces of fabric using the pattern. Sew the pieces together with the right sides facing inward, leaving the top side open. Turn it over and add a ribbon loop to hang it. Try using different fabrics to make the stockings more creative.

Instead of buying ornaments for your Christmas tree, have your kids make their own. They can make stars, gingerbread men and candy canes to decorate the tree. Instruct them to make a pattern out of card stock to cut the fabric and sew two pieces together leaving a hole to turn it over. After they turn them over, tell the kids to fill the ornaments with polyester stuffing and stitch the hole closed. Add a piece of ribbon to hang them on the tree. Use fabrics such as felt or cotton for the ornaments, using various colours and designs. Children can also use various embellishments to decorate the ornaments.

Christmas Tree

Another fun decoration that children can make for Christmas is felt Christmas trees. Kids can make these trees in various sizes to hang on doors and walls, by the stockings or any place they would like. This is also a great activity to teach children how to sew buttons. Have the kids cut two Christmas trees out of felt using the same pattern, and then sew buttons and other decorations onto one of the pieces of fabric. Help the kids stitch the trees together with the right sides facing out, leaving a little hole open. Finally, stuff the trees, sew the hole closed and add a piece of ribbon to hang the trees.

Place Mats

A sewing craft that can be easily personalised is place mats. Have the children cut rectangles of cotton fabric for the place mats. Decorate the place mats by sewing buttons and fabric cutouts of candy canes, trees, stars, angels and other images they like. They can also write the name of the person who will use the place mat using fabric markers. When they are done decorating, have the kids sew another piece of fabric on the back of the place mat. Children can also give these place mats as gifts and write a little message on the place mat with fabric markers for the person receiving it.
