Cakes and cupcakes are welcome desserts at Halloween parties for children, teens and adults. A wide array of colourful cake ideas can be accomplished with simple to highly detailed decorating techniques. Partygoers will be tempted with mouth-watering or comically gross cakes that are decorated with frosting, fondant and candies.

Spooky Characters

The faces of familiar Halloween monsters are piped with frosting onto cupcakes. Frankenstein, Dracula, the Mummy and other movie creeps are created for the enjoyment of the Halloween celebrant. The cutesy smiling faces or the gross-out frighteners are made with star, petal and round decorator tips. Candy melts are poured over cupcakes for a hard-shell surface to be finished off with piped facial features. Full-size character cakes are hand-piped using a star tip for a detailed and colourful Halloween cake. Round bundt or angel food cake pans form plump spider or Jack o' lantern bodies to be frosted and decorated with sugar facial features.

Halloween Scenes

A gingerbread house set onto a rectangular-shaped cake is transformed into a haunted house with candy corn shingles and orange shutters. A frosted graveyard cake is topped with cookie tombstones and ghost-shaped candies. A cake frosted with a green grass technique makes a pumpkin patch setting for a young child's party cake. Cakes and cupcakes are topped with circles of dark frosting that are swirled into spider webbing with simple toothpick or knife markings.

Candy or Fondant Features

Candy and fondant pieces are moulded into eyes, bugs, gravestones, bat wings and creepy decorations for frosted cupcakes and full-size cakes. Halloween sugar sprinkles with bat, pumpkin, cat and ghost shapes are easy decorations to sprinkle onto individual cake tops. A fondant brain-topped cupcake will be a winner with older boys who love to gross one another out. Flesh colouring added to fondant will cover a skull-shaped cake for a creepy zombie face cake.

Cake Toppers

Small plastic novelty toppers are often used to decorate a frosted cupcake. Halloween toppers include Jack o' lanterns, black cats, spooky signs and witch heads. The novelty pieces are made with a plastic or stick post that is inserted into the frosted cake top. A graveyard of brown frosting with a plastic zombie hand reaching up through the surface is one creepy idea for a teen party. Small signs that read "boo," "beware" or "rest in pieces" will add spooky little messages to the frosted cakes.

Special Effects

Frosting gels and jelly products add the gooey gross touch to a Halloween cupcake. Red gel is added to any decorative touch giving it a bloody appearance. Green and black gel will add a disgusting burst from the soft interior when an unwitting party guest bites into the brain cupcake. Liquorice strings add creepy crawly legs to a spider cupcake.
