The ponytail represents a versatile, low-maintenance hairstyle, perfect for weekends, casual errands or working out. A basic ponytail works well for many situations, but sometimes you might want a little more pizazz. If you want to add some style to this hairstyle staple, spice up your ponytail with cute accessories or simple and quick tricks.

Barrettes or Hair Clips

Pull your hair back into a basic high or low ponytail. Then clip any flyaways or frizzies on the sides of your head with small barrettes or hair clips. Look for cute accessories that add sparkle to your hairstyle. Pretty hair clips or barrettes jazz up any outfit and help you turn heads all night long.

Headbands

Add a headband to a high or low ponytail for an instantly playful, stylish look. Headbands also help keep stray strands of hair out of your face. Choose from narrow or wide headbands in a variety of colours and textures, such as metallic, knit or plastic.

Braided Ponytails

After pulling your hair back in a high ponytail, braid the ponytail for a polished, pretty look. Secure the end of the braid with another elastic. Add more visual interest by tying a ribbon to your hair elastic after pulling your hair back in a pony. Then braid the ribbon into your ponytail braid.

Fake Hair

Spice up a ponytail by using an elastic with fake hair attached. You can find fake hair scrunchies that range from realistic to ridiculous. Switch up your normal style by adding fake hair in a different colour or texture from your real hair.

Ribbons, Flowers and Scrunchies

Colour-coordinate your outfit by using a coloured scrunchie instead of a plain elastic or by tying a matching ribbon around your ponytail. Alternately, tuck a fake or real flower inside your elastic for a tropical look.

Wrapping Hair Around Elastic

Get a professional, polished look by tying your hair back in a high or low pony. Then separate a thin chunk of the pony and wrap it around the elastic several times, camouflaging the elastic. Tuck the end of the strand into the elastic to keep it in place.

Warning

Pulling your hair too tightly when creating a ponytail may cause traction alopecia, a type of hair loss caused by tight hairstyles. Early stages of traction alopecia are reversible, but long-term damage sometimes causes scars.
