Writing the appropriate birthday wish and message can be a difficult task. Your message will depend on a number of factors, including the age of the recipient and your relationship to him or her. Whether you are looking for a funny poem or a serious quote, there are a variety of different messages to deliver in a birthday card.

Jokes

For a friend or young child, a birthday wish with a funny joke or message can really hit the spot. This can include recalling a funny experience you shared together, telling an inside joke or relaying another lighthearted story. Jokes about a person's age or your lack of gift are also possibilities. Many birthday cards will include a funny premise, but penning your own adds a personal touch.

Love

A heartfelt message can be more appropriate for your significant other or a parent. A birthday provides a great opportunity for you to express your true feelings, ranging from a simple single line ("With each year, my love for you grows" for example) to an extensive message about how you felt when you met that person. Many birthday cards offer expressions of love, but you can add on to these or create your own message.

Poems

Poems, which appear in a variety of forms about many different topics, allow you to cover many emotions in one birthday message. You can write a personal poem where you touch on funny or emotional experiences. You can also copy a passage from a favourite poem that you think relates to the birthday person.

Quotes

Adding an inspirational or uplifting quote to your birthday card can help convey your message. The quotes can be funny; Lucille Ball once said, "The secret of staying young is to live honestly, eat slowly and lie about your age." You can also provide some inspiration; poet Lucy Larcom said, "Whatever with the past has gone, the best is always yet to come." Quotes are a great way to raise the spirits of a birthday person worried about getting old.

Religious

For some people, a religious message provides a poignant birthday wish. Discussing how blessed a person is or explaining your relationship with God can help you connect with the birthday person on a personal level. You can also add one of your favourite passages from religious readings to serve as spiritual inspiration.
