When it comes to fashion, the '80s conjure up images of big hair, bright colours and looks that make a bold statement. This was the heyday of punk rock music, and the aggressive personality of the music was reflected in the era's fashion. If you love the 80s, fashion from the 80s or just want to channel your inner punk girl, consider the following style elements.

To put together your punk outfit think black--lots of black. Wear black fitted trousers or a short black skirt with black tights underneath. Pair with an all black T-shirt. If you want to break up some of the black, a short plaid skirt or maybe a T-shirt of an 80s band will also work well. For shoes, any type of combat boots or dark lace up shoes will complete the look.

To accomplish the punk look, go for elements that will accentuate a pale complexion. Wear little or no blush. Instead, create dramatic eyes and lips. Use black or dark shadow on your lids, thick eyeliner and mascara. Apply deep red lipstick in a matt finish. For a finishing touch, paint your nails black.

Any black or silver jewellery, like a choker necklace, will make great accessories for your punk look. For bracelets, wear leather cuffs or bangles. A leather jacket and lacy tights are also possibilities. Attach pins with slogans onto your shirt or jacket.

When it comes to punk fashion, the spikier your hair, the better; mohawks were hugely popular in the '80s punk scene. You will need lots of hairspray or gel to keep the different sections of your hair standing on edge. If it's simply not possible for your hair to defy gravity, look for a wig that gives the same effect. If you want, spray the wig or your hair with bright, neon-coloured hairspray. Another option is to let your hair loose in a wild mane with lots of volume.
