The First Holy Communion is a Catholic ritual and sacrament that children experience for the first time at about age 7. It is the act of a child receiving the Eucharist, which is symbolic of Jesus' body, and it is an important occasion for a Catholic child. Before receiving First Holy Communion, the child has to have been baptised and gone to confession.

First Holy Communion dresses resemble small wedding dresses. They are all white and typically adorned with some type of design or beading. Different styles include tea length, knee length and full length. Sleeves range from long sleeves to short sleeves and no sleeves. The dress is worn with a veil, white shoes and usually white tights. First Holy Communion dresses are available in Catholic and Christian religious supply stores.

A perfect gift for a girl receiving her First Holy Communion is a cross or crucifix necklace. Both are symbolic of Jesus and Christianity. There is a wide variety to choose from. Typically, the crosses come in silver or gold and different sizes. Another type of necklace that would make an appropriate gift is a religious pendant of a patron saint or the Virgin Mary. Patron saint medals, which would make a meaningful gift for a girl for First Communion, are available in a wide variety.

Rosary Beads

Rosary beads are a Catholic tradition that are consist of a series of prayers represented by beads connected to a cross or crucifix. A set of rosary beads would make a thoughtful and well-suited gift for a girl's First Holy Communion. Rosary beads come in materials such as wood, porcelain, crystal, gold and silver. This is a gift that the girl will be able to use for prayers for years to come.

Children's Bibles

A children's Bible would be an appropriate gift for the First Communion. These Bibles often use terminology that's easier for children to understand. This would give the recipient the opportunity to learn more about the teachings of the Bible on her own. Children's Bibles often come with pictures to illustrate the stories for easier comprehension. Bibles can be personalised with names and dates to mark the special occasion.
