When looking for inspiration for trippy costumes, you can find a lot of it in the '60s and the '70s. The two decades have, both with their fashion sense and youth culture, defined the word "trippy." At a basic level, "trippy" describes the effect of hallucinogenic drugs. It means bright and eye-popping colours, which is why the most important rule of a trippy costume is the necessity to make it as colourful as possible.

A Hippie

Hippies were children of the revolution in the '70s. If you want to dress as a trippy hippie, you need bell-bottomed jeans and a floral patterned shirt. Put a blazer over the shirt, a headband in your hair and wear round sunglasses. For girls, a simple floral prairie dress will work. Put real flowers in your hair to complete the look. Remember that everything has to be colourful, so don't try to match. If the dress or shirt you have on is yellow, put a red or blue headband in your hair.

An Aura

The hippie movement was all about spiritual experiences, which is why going as one of the abstract terms that were commonly used back then, is a brilliant costume idea. Going as an aura is also a very simple costume. You can go as any kind of aura, just dress up in one of the aura colours, like yellow, red or blue. Get face paint and a wig in the same colour. Alternatively, you can go as the aura spectrum, which will be even more trippy. Paint an old T-shirt and pair of trousers in all the colours of the rainbow, using fabric paint.

A Drug

These decades are also known for massive drug usage, which makes going as a drug a mighty original and clever idea. The most commonly used trippy drug at that time was acid. Dress up in extremely colourful clothes, and put on some crazy sunglasses to achieve this look. You could also dress up as a mushroom and go as "magic shrooms."

A Disco King/Queen

Another option for trippy clothing is going as a member of the disco brigade. Again, the clothing should all be colourful and shiny. A good idea is a brightly coloured suit paired with rainbow shaded sunglasses. If you can get your hands on a small disco ball, you should carry it around with you as a trippy prop.
