Beef broth is a common ingredient in numerous recipes, such as soup, stew, sauces and for braising meats. Like any ingredient, if you don't have it available you'll want a suitable alternative to take its place. Alternately, if you are living a vegetarian lifestyle, beef broth isn't suitable. Fortunately, there are other items that you can successfully use as a substitution that will not overly alter the taste of the recipe.

Bouillon Cubes

Beef bouillon cubes and bouillon granules are suitable as substitutes for beef broth in recipes. Granules are made from dried and ground concentrated beef stock and are suitable for stews and soups. Cubes are highly concentrated broth flavouring that are weaker than stock. These will usually have a higher sodium content, but there are low-sodium options available. When using bouillon to replace broth in a recipe, dissolve either 1 tbsp or one cube in boiling water for every 1 cup of beef broth.

Vegetable Broth

Vegetable broth is a commonly used in place of beef broth, particularly for people who are vegan or vegetarian. For every 1 cup beef broth that the recipe calls for use 1 cup of vegetable broth in its place. If plain vegetable broth does not provide enough beef flavouring, use a beef-flavoured vegetable broth if you have it. Alternately, mix 1 tbsp soy sauce with 1 tbsp steak sauce and add it to a scant cup of vegetable broth for a heartier taste.

Beef Stock

Beef stock is very similar to beef broth and is a natural replacement for beef broth in recipes. Although they are often mistaken for the same thing, there is a difference in how they are made. Beef stock, for example, is made mainly from boiling beef bones and vegetables. Beef broth, on the other hand, is made from both meat and bone, which gives it a meatier flavour and lighter body. Use 1 cup stock to replace 1 cup broth.

Soy Sauce

Soy sauce may seem like an unusual substitute for beef broth, but it is actually a quick and simple alternative. Other than adding 1 tbsp soy and steak sauce each to 1 cup plain vegetable broth, another option is to combine 1 tbsp soy sauce with 1 cup of plain water. This will also work in place of 1 cup of broth, particularly in recipes that are not dependent on the broth for the meat flavouring. Soy sauce is also suitable for vegetarians looking for a beef broth alternatives.
