Purchase a christening or baptism gift if you are serving as a godparent to the individual being christened. Show your appreciation to the godparents of your child by presenting them with a gift at the christening, as well. It is also customary to give a small monetary gift to the clergy member performing the christening, as well, if you are the parents of the baptised person.

Traditional Godparent Gifts

Consider purchasing a traditional godparent gift if you are serving as the christened child's godparent. Have a silver item engraved, such as a cup, bowl or utensils for a classic christening gift. Engrave the item with the name of the child being christened and your name, the godparent. Other engraved gift options include a sterling silver rattle, silver picture frame, brush, bible or bookmark. See "Resources" for more information.

Nursery Gifts from Godparents

Give the christened baby a keepsake item for his nursery. Consider options like a baby quilt, snow globe engraved with the baby's name or a decorative picture frame. Create a special memento for the baby by assembling a keepsake kit. Include a photo of the baby as well as the baby's footprints and handprints. See "Resources" for details on this gift option. A cashmere baby blanket personalised with the baby's name is another generous gift option.

Other Gifts

Help plan for the baby's future by giving a monetary gift for her baptism. Writing a check is an option, but you could also give a savings bond or other investment in the child's name. It is appropriate to be generous with a monetary baptism gift, since it is intended to help with the child's future. Make a handmade christening gift for another appropriate gift option. A hand-knit blanket, a homemade quilt or crocheted bonnet or gown are all items that will be appreciated.

Gift to Godparents

Show your appreciation for the people who have agreed to be godparents by presenting them with a gift at the christening. Since they are agreeing to be integral parts of the child's life, it is only appropriate to give them meaningful gift. Select a sophisticated silver picture frame, engraved with the baby's name as a classic option. Other alternatives include an engraved plaque, cuff links, a personalised mug, trinket box, inspirational figurine or vase. Normally, godparent gifts will be items they can display in their homes.
