History

Simple Green All-Purpose Cleaner, originally developed to clean coffee roasting equipment, introduced its environmentally safe cleanser before the institution of government mandates. As the California-based business evolved, the inventors marketed the product to various industrial and automotive customers as a machinery and floor cleaner. In 1981, the manufacturing company became known as Sunshine Makers, Inc. Simple Green then made its national consumer retail debut in hardware stores, grocery/drug chains and warehouse buying clubs across the country.

Product Line

Today, Simple Green encompasses over 20 cleaning products for retail, government and industrial customers. The company's products range from the original, concentrated All-Purpose Cleaner, to specialised cleaners for stone, stainless steel, glass, sports equipment, cars, decks, driveways and house siding. The manufacturer also makes pet odour and stain removers, dish-washing liquid, hand wash, a floor care product and carpet cleaner.

Ingredients

Simple Green lists water as the main product ingredient. Simple Green contains a proprietary fragrance and an undisclosed green colourant. The ingredient butoxyethanol, an effective cleanser and solvent, removes grease and dirt without harming paints, protective sealants and coatings. Sodium citrate serves as a preservative to extend product life and prevent the formation of bacteria. Tetrapotassium pyrophosphate, a colourless emulsifier, combines with oily substances and dissolves them for easy cleaning. A common surfactant found in household cleaners, mixed alcohol ethoxylate, acts to help lift oil and grease build-up from surfaces.

Uses

Dilute Simple Green All-Purpose Cleaner with water to clean floors, driveways, cookware and glass. Simple Green, safe for all washable surfaces and textiles, eliminates household grime and stains including dirt, oil, grease, pet stains, coffee, juice, lipstick, blood and glue. It also works on tough jobs, like kitchen drain build-up and cleaning greasy tools

Cautions

The Simple Green Material Safety Sheet lists a number of cautions for consumers. Butoxyethanol, the only Simple Green ingredient deemed toxic by federal government standards, falls below hazardous levels at less than 4 per cent in its undiluted state. The product, if swallowed, may result in stomach or intestinal distress. In case of eye contact that results in mild to moderate irritation, flush immediately with water. Contact dermatitis can occur with repeated use or extended exposure to the product.
