For those who drive a pickup or other kind of truck, fuel economy is not always the first concern. But in a world where fuel prices can rise almost daily, saving money at the gas pump is a common concern. More and more cars and vehicles are being designed with fuel economy in mind.

Ford Ranger

The 2011 Ford Ranger is considered the most fuel efficient pickup on the road by the U.S. Department of Energy. It is a small pickup which comes in several trim levels and can seat between three and five passengers. It comes with either a 2.3-litre I4 or a 4-liter V6 engine and a 17 or 19.5-gallon fuel tank. It runs on unleaded gasoline and offers its best fuel mileage with the 2.3-litre engine. The truck can manage 21 miles per gallon in the city and up to 27mpg on the open road.

Toyota Tacoma

It comes in a variety of trim levels, including basic and double cabs as well as standard or long cargo beds. It has two engine options, a 2.7-litre I4 and a 4-liter V6 all with 21.1 gallon fuel tanks. With the 2.7-litre engine, the truck can manage 21mpg in the city and can achieve 25mpg out on the open road.

Chevy Silverado Hybrid

The 2011 Chevy Silverado Hybrid is a full-sized pickup which offers good gas mileage. It comes with just one choice of cab option and one truck bed length. It only comes with a 6-liter V8 engine and a two-mode hybrid propulsion system. The truck has a large, 26-gallon fuel tank and can offer up to 20mpg in the city, which improves to 23mpg on the open roads.
