It's nice to go out on the town with your special someone, but every once in a while the two of you need to skip the outing for a romantic evening at home alone. If you have children, send them to a relative for the night and turn your living room into a den of romance. Set the mood and tone for the evening with a romantic decor and food.

For a romantic floor picnic, light candles all around the room. Place a blanket or luxurious rug in the middle of the floor along with some throw pillows. Set a silver tray out to hold finger foods or a bottle of champagne and two champagne glasses. Arrange house plants around the blanket to give off a feel of a garden. For a fancier dinner set up, you can use the same decor but place a table in the middle of the room with a candelabra or floral centrepiece. Spread roses on the tablecloth or in a circle around the table.

Serve romantic types of food, particularly finger foods that you can feed to each other. Serve oysters on a half shell, a well-known aphrodisiac. Another romantic foods suggestions is a nuts and fruit platter with almonds, dates and grapes on a vine. Make bruschetta with a strong cheese and drizzle honey over it for a sweet and savoury contrast. You can lick dripping honey off of each other's fingers. Serve whole strawberries with chocolate fondue and feed each other. You can also serve fondue with pound cake squares and brownies. Chocolate truffles are also perfect a romantic night snack.

Don't just wear your regular jeans and top for this special occasion. Women, wear a sexy or form-fitting dress you know he loves. Men, impress your loved one with a collared shirt and slacks. Or, for a more sensual evening, women can wear only lingerie with heels. Men can channel Hugh Hefner and wear a fancy robe and boxer shorts only. Choose the tone of dress based on the mood of the evening. If you are planning on watching movies afterwards, wearing lingerie will only tempt you to skip the movie and head straight for the bedroom, so decide where you really want the evening to go.

Music helps set the tone for a romantic evening. For classic romance, a CD with jazz instrumentals or a symphony will work. You could also play a CD of his or her favourite love songs or special songs that have meant something to the two of you over the years. If the two of you love to dance, add in some up tempo songs for the two of you to dance the night away with.
