Pin-up girls were the epitome of sexiness and femininity during the 1940s and 1950s. These years were the first in several decades to celebrate the naturally curvy body of women. In the previous decades of the 1920s and 1930s, boyish shapes were more fashionable than curvy shapes. The traditional pin-up girl wore little clothing and posed in a provocative manner. Because pin-up girls remain famous even in the modern world of 2011, it is easy to find pin-up girl costumes to wear.

Swimming Costume

Swimming costumes were popular attire for pin-up girls in the 1940s and 1950s. Although mid-19th century swimming costumes would be considered almost modest by 2011 swimwear standards, in the '40s and '50s, the suits worn by pin-ups pushed the limits of decency. Consider high-waisted bikinis, halter top one-piece suits with full-coverage bottoms or a modest bikini top worn with high-waisted denim shorts. Pair your suit with hair worn in traditional pin-up curls, plucked and perfect brows, and bright red lipstick. Wear classic high heels with nylons to complete the look.

Lingerie

Another popular look for a pin-up girl was the lingerie look. Pin-up girls wore a variety of lingerie styles, from basic bras and full-coverage underwear to body suits with bustier tops. Emulate this look, pairing the lingerie with thigh-high stockings and a garter belt, high heels and a fur or feather stole or wrap. Embellish the look with classic pin-up girl make-up, or bright red lips and fake eyelashes. Add an old-fashioned hat if you can procure one from your grandmother or an antique store.

Work Wear

Another style worn by pin-up girls in the 1940s and 1950s was work wear. This time period saw the first "sexy" labels applied to professionals, such as sexy nurses, sexy librarians, sexy farmers and sexy secretaries. The best way to transform a modest work style into pin-up wear is to exaggerate the look, making it a little tighter, shorter and flashier than women would actually wear. For example, a sexy farmer could wear a short gingham skirt and an off-the-shoulder blouse while sexy nurse could wear a short white dress with a few too many buttons undone.

Military Chic

During World War II, pin-up girls experienced their heyday. During this time, many pin-up girls were shown in military outfit, including Navy wear, Army wear and pilot wear. To dress as a sexy military pin-up girl, wear a classic woman's military uniform from the 1940s with a twist. For example, show cleavage and tighten a belt around your waist to accentuate your feminine curves. Crop a sailor shirt to expose your midriff; however, your trousers should cover the belly button; trousers were still worn above the belly button during the pin-up era. Position a jaunty military hat over curls to complete the look.
