There's only so long you can keep your mouth occupied with food. (Thomas Northcut/Lifesize/Getty Images)

Sometimes one comes across a social situation that teeters just on the edge of awkward. These situations tend to be those where people who don't know each other very well or at all find themselves in circumstances where they are forced to make conversation. For these situations, it is helpful to have a supply of interesting and inoffensive riddles as ice breakers.

The Cellar Door

A girl lives in a house with a cellar door. Her parents have told her never, ever to open this door because she is not prepared to see what is behind it. What is on the other side of the door?

Answer: The house and the outside world. The girl is locked in the cellar.

The Doctor

A father and his son are in a car accident. The father dies instantly and the boy is taken to the hospital. The doctor takes a look at the boy and declares, "I can't operate on this boy because he is my son." How is this possible?

Answer: The doctor is the boy's mother.

The Dead Man

A man is found dead in the middle of the desert wearing only his underwear and holding only a straw. How did he die?

Answer: Two men were in a hot air balloon over the desert. The balloon started to go down because of excess weight, and both would die if they were stranded in the desert. Both men threw out their clothes, and when the balloon kept going down, they drew straws to see who would stay in the balloon. The dead man drew the short straw and jumped.

The Brothers

You are walking down a path, and you come to two doors. One of these doors leads to Heaven and the other leads to Hell. In front of the doors are two identical twins. One always tells the truth and the other always lies, but you don't know which is which. You are allowed to ask one brother one question. What should you ask?

Answer: Ask one of the brothers "If I were to ask your brother which door leads to Heaven, what would he say?" The truth-telling brother will point to the door to Hell, because that is indeed what the liar would answer when faced with the question, and the lying brother will also point to the door to Hell, because that is not what his brother would say.
