A child's bedroom should address his needs and reflect his personality. Many boys would enjoy a locker room-inspired bedroom that is functional, modern and welcoming. Take into account the different elements found in most locker rooms and adapt them to the bedroom. Address the room's main purpose and impart a sense of style.

Changing room floors take a lot of abuse and so do boy's bedrooms. Invest in durable, quality flooring in a neutral colour, as this will create a strong foundation for most decorating styles. Wood or laminate flooring is an option, but to boost locker room style install cork flooring. Cork is durable, absorbs sounds, is soft under foot, and is reminiscent of cork boards found in many changing rooms. Add an area carpet with the child's monogram, or add a rug with a favourite sports team's logo.

The colour of your favourite team is an obvious choice for wall colour. Add interest by painting a pin stripe detail around the perimeter of the room in white or black. Add a second or third stripe to provide even more dimension, especially if you vary the width of the stripes. Sports murals are also a good choice, but are often time-consuming and expensive. When choosing a mural, choose one theme, such as baseball or football, and restrict the application to one accent wall. Paint the remaining walls a colour that coordinates with the mural. This will create a bold feature and become your springboard for other decorating elements in the room.

Storage is paramount in any bedroom and the more the better. What would a locker room-themed bedroom be without lockers? Metal lockers or wooden wardrobes that resemble lockers provide ample storage. Customise the interiors of the lockers with shelves or drawer inserts to keep disorganisation at bay. If storage is limited, make the most by stealing space wherever you can. Closet organisers, under-bed storage drawers and wall-mount storage cubbies are functional and stylish options.

Finishing Touches

Accessories bring life to a locker-themed room. If there is a desk area or work surface, create a chalkboard and hang it on the wall. If space allows, add a bench just slightly in front of the lockers as you would see in a standard locker room or at the foot of the bed. Frame team photos or jerseys in simple picture frames and create a wall of fame gallery. Proudly display trophies, baseball bats, footballs or other sport paraphernalia on shelves or table tops. Add a scoreboard as artwork for your room. It is these final touches that will add a dose of team spirit and keep the room from feeling cold and utilitarian.
