Most young Christians understand the concept of the Father and the Son. However, the Holy Spirit, the third member of the Trinity, proves harder to comprehend. God's love for his people is so strong that he blessed us with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is meant to help and guide people in their everyday decisions. Teaching teenagers about the Holy Spirit will deepen their spiritual relationship as well as help guide them through the challenges of life.

What is the Holy Spirit

Use the Bible and its authors to help explain the Holy Spirit. John 4:24 reads, "God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." This scripture implies that God is invisible, and so is the Holy Spirit. Revelations states that God alone is holy. Because the Holy Spirit comes from God, he too is holy. Reading in Psalms teaches students where to find God's spirit.

Gifts of the Spirit

Many branches of the Christian church teach on the gifts of the Spirit written in 1 Corinthians. The gifts of the Spirit are special spiritual abilities given to Christian believers by God. These gifts are used to build up the church. Faith and healing are two of the nine Gifts of the Spirit. Bible study lessons should include information on the spiritual gifts, how they are given and how they are to be used.

Fruits of the Spirit

Study the Fruits of the Spirit. Galations 5:22-23 list the Fruits of the Spirit. Love, joy and peace are just three out of the nine wonderful qualities Christians are given through the Holy Spirit. It is significant that these nine fruits are specifically listed and a direct gift from God himself. Ask students to read Galatians and list all nine Fruits of the Spirit. Individual fruits are listed among other passages within the Bible and should be researched as well.

The Deity of the Spirit

The book of Romans, 1 Corinthians, the book of Peter, and 2 Corinthians give the Holy Spirit names that are only suitable for God. The Holy Spirit, in fact, has divine characteristics, such as omniscience, found in 1 Corinthians and Psalms. Omnipotence is found in Genesis 1:2. Holiness is found in Romans, and wisdom in Isaiah. The Bible says the Holy Spirit does the works of God. These works can be found in Genesis, Peter, Luke and John, as well as many other chapters. Encourage students to read through and list these works.

The Spirit in the Believer

The Holy Spirit lives within a Christian believer doing inward works, encouraging personal transformation and providing grace. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 says that the body is a sanctuary of the Holy Spirit, given by God. The books of John, Galatians, Ephesians and Romans all contain scriptures stating that the Holy Spirit dwells within. The Holy Spirit is meant to help the believer to live a holy life. Provide teenagers with these scriptures and discuss how living in the Spirit can change everyday choices.
