The Best Bridesmaid Dresses for Plus-Size Women

A plus-size bridesmaid dress should accentuate curves. The dress should showcase an ample bust or a round behind instead of hiding them. A curvy body looks best in structured dresses made of quality fabrics. Think of classic 1950s and 60s silhouettes; these styles feature longer hemlines, thicker straps and defined waistlines.

    A Dress with Straps

Avoid strapless dress styles. Plus-size bridesmaids should be able to wear a bra under their dress in order to support and secure a larger bust. Make sure the straps are thick enough to completely cover bra straps. Check the back of the dress to make sure it comes up high enough to cover a bra. A dress with straps is comfortable for a bridesmaid to wear all day long and secure enough for her to dance in during the reception.

A Dress that Defines the Waistline

A dress that is fitted or has a defined waist will look best on a plus-size bridesmaid. Choose a style with an empire waistline or a dress that is belted or sashed around the waist. This accentuates the smallest part of the body and gives the body an hourglass shape. Belts or sashes should sit slightly above the natural waistline and slightly under the bust line; this area is the smallest part of a woman's torso.

    A Knee-Length Dress

Choose a style that hits slightly above or below the knee or a full-length style. Bridesmaids dresses are traditionally knee-length or longer. Stay away from shorter styles to achieve an elegant and timeless look. The curves of a plus-size bridesmaid are accentuated in a knee-length cut. Full-length gowns focus the eye on a woman's face and neck and elongates her body, also a good choice for a plus-size woman.

A Dress in a Quality Fabric

A plus-size bridesmaid should wear a dress that is made of high quality material. A dress made from fabric that is shiny, clingy or heavy is a bad choice. Fabrics like jersey and cotton are a good choice. These fabrics have enough structure but are also comfortable and breathable. Choose a quality fabric to avoid a "prom dress" look. Think seasonally as well; do not choose a velvet dress for a wedding in mid-July.
