Getting a master's degree in business administration is probably going to involve writing and defending a dissertation. If the focus within your MBA is finance, the thesis of your dissertation will be in finance. The dissertation is not a recital of finance knowledge you've acquired. It's a demonstration that you've synthesised information you've acquired. You'll make your own argument on a finance-related topic, present your own research to back up your assertion, then defend your argument to a dissertation committee.

Effects of Reinstating the Glass-Steagall Act

Many economists point to the repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act in 1999 as an impetus for the credit bubble and subsequent collapse. There is support to re-enact the Glass-Steagall Act, which separated investment banking from commercial banking. You could study how a new Glass-Steagall Act might affect the credit markets.

Regulation of Hedge Funds

Critics cite the popularity of hedge funds and their relative lack of regulations as being detrimental to U.S. financial markets. Hedge funds, which are similar in structure to mutual funds, do not have to follow the guidelines of mutual funds, including limitations of aggressive leveraging. A model showing the effects of hedge funds with various levels of regulation would be a good topic.

Credit Grading CDOs

Collateralised Debt Obligations, or CDOs, are also frequently cited as culprits in the credit crisis. Wall Street did not accurately grade the credit of the CDOs, which failed on a large scale. In order to accurately grade the credit of a CDO, the value of the underlying mortgages and real estate used as collateral for the mortgages must be determined. A dissertation could describe problems in the credit grading and prescribe new methods.

Protecting Credit Markets with Mortgage Insurance

While there are many criticisms of the relatively new subprime mortgages, few experts have criticised FHA loans. FHA loans, if they were not classified as "government loans" would be classified as subprime. Failure of FHA loans didn't have as devastating effect as the failure of subprime loans because FHA borrowers were required to purchase insurance, guaranteeing the performance of the loan. A thesis could describe a model of mortgage insurance as used by FHA to protect the overall health of the mortgage market.
