At the beginning of a relationship, getting a gift for a girlfriend is challenging. The gift should show caring and love, but should not be inappropriate for the length of time together. A first gift might fall on the girlfriend's birthday, a holiday like Valentine's Day or even just a gift to show affection. In general, a first gift will end up being somewhere less than a year into the relationship.

Chocolate is a romantic and sweet gift idea for any length of relationship. It is appropriate for a first gift to give a box of her favourite chocolates. It not only shows caring to give the gift of chocolate, but it also gives the woman a special treat she might not buy personally and is appropriate whether the first gift ends up a week into the relationship or three months down the road.

Flowers are the cliched gift of a first date, but they are appropriate gifts for the first gift. A flower or bouquet of flowers is relatively inexpensive, but can tell how much a woman is loved. Flowers often have meaning, such as a red rose meaning love. Get her favourite flower or get a flower with special meaning appropriate to the relationship.

As a first gift, giving jewellery requires care. Avoid rings, which might be inappropriately interpreted, and stick to bracelets or necklaces. Keep the price of the jewellery down below £48 or so as a first gift early in the relationship. Women like jewellery, but rushing into rings or buying expensive jewellery might create problems.

Personalised Gifts

Personalised gifts, such as a picture frame with her name on it or a simple pendant with her name, is an appropriate first gift that also tells her she is special. A personalised gift can have more than just her name, it might also have a special message etched into it that reminds her every time she looks at it how special she is.
