As one of the seven dwarfs, Dopey won the hearts of generations in Disney's full-length animated film "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.' The sweet, childlike character was particularly endearing and offered some of the best comic moments of the movie, all without saying a word. He likely remains the favourite of millions.

The Coat

Dopey's coat is perhaps the most essential part of the costume, and there are two ways to make one. The first is to find a ready-made garment and convert it into the coat, which should be oversized, reaching to the floor and over the hands. The collar is a high turtleneck style and the coat buttons down the front. Buy a large adult size, light green, turtleneck shirt. Cut the sleeves off at about the fingertips and hem the cut edges. Cut it up the front, from the hemline to the belt line. Add two large, fake, yellow buttons to the top centre and a brown patch on each elbow. If you cannot find a suitable garment to convert, you can make a Dopey coat from scratch with a pattern at a store such as Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores, or adapt a similar pattern by changing the collar or sleeves.

The Hat

Dopey's hat is a large purple cone shape and should be easy to make. Cut out two large purple triangles from a soft fabric. The top point should be rounded and the base a little wider than half the diameter of the head. Sew the two pieces together and leave the base open. Flip it inside out and fold the base into a cuff.

The Shoes

Dopey's shoes look like baggy pointed-toe brown socks. If the costume will be worn indoors, sew a pair of brown socks into a point at each toe and wear. If you are going to be outdoors, such as for trick-or-treating, make a pair of felt shoe covers. Simply draw and cut out two pieces of material a little larger than the shape of the shoes. Sew them together, leaving the bottoms and ankles open. Flip them inside out and wear over the shoes. Costume shops sometimes sell elf shoes and covers as well.

The trousers will not show much, so a pair of blue sweat pants will work. A black belt with a large gold buckle goes over the coat. If you cannot find one, make one by adding a buckle to a strip of black faux leather or vinyl. You can also make your own buckle from gold craft foam. Dopey was bald, so the child can cover his hair with the hat or wear a bald cap from a costume shop. Large fake ears complete the look.
