A trend in high schools across the United States is the distinct formation of social groups, also known as cliques. These social groups are detrimental to many high school students, either because the students are bullied as a result of the group they are put in or because they feel pressured to be someone that they are not or to take part in bullying.

The "jocks" in school are often defined as those students who are extremely athletic or interested in sports activities. Almost any sport activity participation gives someone the label of a jock. Jocks are often very healthy and fit. Someone may also be considered a jock if they wear athletic clothes or shoes more than the average person, even if they do not play sports themselves.
Popular is a term that is used in high school cliques to define those people, usually girls, who are well-liked and envied by their peers. This exclusive group is often very hard for girls to break into, causing self-esteem problems and bullying. People may be considered popular because of the friends they associate with, because of their money or because of the fashionable outfits they choose to wear.
Students tend to be labelled "geek" when they have extreme intelligence or know a lot about subjects that other students find difficult and intimidating, such as math, science and technology. Students can also be labelled "geek" because of their appearance. If students look different than other students, wear clothes that are not in style or have features that make them unique. Geeks often are the victims of bullying in school.
Very intelligent persons
Students are often given the label of "brainiac" when they are much smarter than the rest of the class or perceived as having a high intelligence. These students often spend a lot of their time both in school and outside of school studying and preparing academically for their future. They may also be involved in many different clubs and organisations and find that they do not have time for social activities that many high school students enjoy like partying.
